I'm going to see Madonna!
I was reading the paper this morning and there was a teeny-tiny notice that they had finalized the stage requirements for her show here and had released a block of tickets (the show was sold out). I went online and got two of the cheapest tickets available - and they're right behind the stage!
Now I'm thinking that Madonna, being Madonna, is not going to short-shift the fans sitting right behind her so the seats should at the very least be darn good. I'm excited!
In honor of Madonna, I'm doing a top ten list from the only three cds have of hers (Ray of Light, Music and Confessions on a Dance Floor). I have a gazillion Madonna tapes, but I'm not including those.
These aren't in any order, by the way.
1. Hung Up
2. Get Together
3. Music
4. Don't Tell Me
5. Drowned
6. Frozen
7. What it Feels Like For A Girl
8. Sorry
9. Future Lovers
10. Let It Will Be
Happy Friday!

I didn't tell you about the art class. It went well!
My friend and I went in the class with all our stuff, tons of construction paper (shredded through a paper shredder), feathers, string, masks we premade from paper plates. We didn't make any samples of what we thought they could do because we tend to find that when the kids see something already made, they get that idea in their heads that that is what it has to look like and everyone ends up doing them like that.
So while we got a lot of blank stares when we described the project, once the kids got going it went great! We had all kinds of masks - velociraptors, flamingos, orangatans, cheetahs, a shark, a snake, all kinds of birds - it was really fun and the kids were amazing! There wasn't one cat or dog, it was funny all the choices they made. Their teacher kept bringing in all the other teachers to check it out. At first I thought they all were just talking but then she said she was having them all check out the fun, that made us feel pretty good.
I felt bad because the classroom literally looked like a bomb hit it, but the kids cleaned up every piece of paper and every feather floating around the room with 15 minutes to spare. I was very happy and proud of all of them (ok, except for that one girl that hogged the tape, but she's kind of like that).
We were invited back for another art class before then end of the year, so I'm trying to think of something fun.
Today's song: Everybody Plays the Fool, by The Main Ingredient ("Dig this!"). Oh, and I want to get the new Pearl Jam cd, I saw them on SNL a week or two back and like their new song. Sheri, Sandy - when's it out??? Is it out?? I looked at the store yesterday and didn't see it. If you read this, let me know!

Hello!
No, life did not end on April 19th. But I have been pretty busy.
Over the weekend, my husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary, which was fun. He got me an iPod which I love tremendously and like to carry around the house just so I can look at it, haha. And it's inscribed with my name and a little message, which is very cool.
I've been trying to figure out how to work it, it seems like every cd I put in to download runs differently, if at all, so I've kind of been out of the loop. I have the newspaper sitting in front of me right now at 9:45 at night and I still haven't read it all or even done the sudoku puzzle yet, so that tells you something.
(OK, it might not tell you something, but it tells me something!)
I did get my Madonna cd to download and I have to say, I've retracted my diss on it, it's a pretty good cd. I must've been hormonal that day I bought it, or something. I'm not sure.
I bought myself a really cool charm bracelet at a little antique store in town. It belonged to a woman who collected the charms for about 35 years, it's really really amazing. It had a Pasadena, California charm on it, which is why it caught my eye (family, there, you know, and I was born right there) and I was talking to the lady that owned the store and she said that the woman had died and her sons didn't know what to do with all of her stuff so they just brought it to the antique store and sold it all. I couldn't let it sit there, it was someone's whole life history, you know? I bought it and I love the sound of the jangling around my wrist. It has 30 charms or so on it and it inspired me to start one of my own. I figure I've got 35 years or so to work on it, but I'll make sure I have someone to give it to so it doesn't end of lost and alone.
I guess it actually isn't, since I have it now.
Today's music: Elvis Presley's 30 #1 Hits, especially "Are You Lonesome Tonight". I wish I could put my record albums on my iPod!!

I finished A Dirty Job and I have to say it was very, very funny. I kind of knew what was going to happen in the end, but the way that Chris Moore got there and the way everything wrapped up was great - I love when books have little listings at the end that tell what happened to the characters "after" the story. There were some conversations between Charlie and Minty Fresh (especially when they meet Audrey) that had me rolling! ("Hello, tied to a chair here," Minty said. "Surrounded by little monsters, Asher. Not the insensitive one".) And the Hellhounds, good stuff. Great book. Seven kept saying "What's so funny?" and I just couldn't even go into it. I can't wait to read another one of his books - I'm looking either to get "Bloodsucking Fiends" (yes, yet another vampire book) or "Lamb".
I'll keep you posted.
Today a friend of mine and I are volunteering to do an art class in Seven's class. My friend's daughter has been in the same class as Seven since they were in Kindergarten. We're doing paper art and making animal masks. Hopefully we won't come off as complete morons - you know, I don't think our audience is tough, they're only seven, but you never know.

Vote for the next Food Network Star!
I love this show on the Food Network. It started with I believe eight people, and each week they had different things to do so they could figure out who should have their own cooking show on food network. Each week they were visited by a different chef - Rachael Ray, Mario Battali, Paula Deen, Giada DeLaurentis. Bobbie Flay is one of the judges.
One person was eliminated each week and now it's down to the last two - Guy and Reggie.
You can vote here, if you watch the show:
http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_nf_vote/text/0,,FOOD_20356_43403,00.html
It's hard to choose who to vote for, because they both have really great things about them, and those things are different. I would've liked it if Clarissa had been in the top two - she was good as well.
You can vote once per day, until Thursday. The results will be on Sunday night.
I've always watched the Food Network here and there, but last Fall I got really, really sick (so sick my husband actually stayed home from work for a few days to take care of the boys because I couldn't even get out of bed) and I literally watched the FoodNetwork all day, all night (when I wasn't sleeping, and even when I was sleeping it was on quietly).
It's funny to me that I like this show so much because if I had my own Food Network show, it would be called "I Can't Cook!" They'd have to keep a huge supply of bandaids and towels around because I'd constantly be cutting myself or grating my finger into something. I'd be making food no one would want to eat. I'm horrible at "substituting" things for other things (one of my husband's pet peeves in the kitchen) and I tend not to read the recipes thoroughly, unless maybe it's a dessert. I've gotten a lot better than I used to be, but I'm still pretty laughable as a cook.
Oh, and a note to Food Network: I'm not interested in seeing Giada at parties and stuff, really. You're going the wrong way there. I like watching her cook, and the parties just make it feel too, oh, E! or InStyle or something like that. I don't want to see some fancy party I'll never go to, I want to see how to do something myself.
*****
Four just came in. He sat in the chair next to me, gave me an angelic smile, held up a pair of fake teeth (full mouth) and said "Mom, I can feel the playdoh making it's way through my body when I wear these".
Ok then.

Cleaning the pool can be a Zen-like experience. Unless you're like me and have allergies, then it's a Zen-like experience for about 15 minutes until the allergies kick in, and then it's just one itchy-scratchy-snorty festival of fun. But still, nice to be outside cleaning the pool.
We had a huge windstorm yesterday, the wind was blowing (they say) 40-50 miles per hour. It was one huge mess. Luckily, nothing wrecked, broken or knocked down. Just a bunch of grapefruit, lemon and ash tree leaves in the pool. And one plastic flower pot. And one scrunchy ball. You couldn't see the bottom of the pool.
Music for cleaning the pool: El Dorado, by Electric Light Orchestra.
Music for sweeping the back patio: 52nd Street (side one) by Billy Joel, with a special shout out to Zanzibar, great song.
Music for cleaning inside the house: They Only Come Out at Night, by the Edgar Winter Group. I used to think Edgar Winter was a little creepy until that episode of the Simpsons where Homer thought he was a zombie and ran him over, that was funny. I've liked him ever since.
Yesterday, being Good Friday, well, we had a special rule. No bad words. Not from us, because we don't swear in front of the boys. It was for the boys, mostly Four. The list was posted in various places around the house thanks to Seven, and included, but was not limited to, the following words:
turd
fart
ass
crack
hole
butt
and a last minute addition:
idiot.
And you'd think you wouldn't have to tell a four year old not to say Sh*t, but guess what? You do. But you're not allowed to write it on a sign to hang in your house.

Seven is off of school today so we have done a lot of nothing. The boys had a birthday party for one of their stuffed toys, where all the animals came out, sat around the room with plates and enjoyed food treats from Four's kitchen. They used real plates and decorated and everything.
We took some film in to be developed, went to the craft store, had lunch at McDonalds (yay, and I mean that not in a great way) and we went to the grocery store. Oh and I bought them a 8'x8' tent and some walkie talkies, which they don't know about it yet because my husband is giving them to the boys tonight for Easter presents. They are going to "sleep out" in the living room.
We did made tshirts with sayings on them (both of the boys put "Link" from Legend of Zelda on theirs. I did mine yesterday and mine says "W And G" for Wallace and Gromit). I wore mine last night to Seven's ballgame.
Did you know you can pretty much put anything on a tshirt and people won't even ask you what it means? I don't know if it's because they're not paying attention or they just don't want to ask because they think maybe they should know but they don't, or what. But nobody asks at all. I have a tshirt that says "The Weird Sisters" on it. It's a band in Harry Potter, and let me tell you, I wear that shirt all the time and only two people ever have asked me what the Weird Sisters are. One was a checkout girl at the local Sunflower market, and the other was a 80 year old man who works at the post office. Nobody else ever asks at all.
I'm not going to put something crude or vulgar on a shirt because I'm just not like that, but I'm wondering what else I can do to see if anyone asks me anything about it. I'll let you know how this goes, it will be my own little experiment.
I don't have any songs today. I'm sick to death of "70's on Seven" on XM radio-tv and I can't find any music I want to listen to, so I'm not listening to anything. I've been jumping around on the stations trying to find something good. Cinemagic (music from movie soundtracks) is kind of good, but a bit too atmospheric I think right now for my mood. I don't want to listen to ANY cheesey pop. I don't want to listen to anything 80's, because I have to listen to that at work and I will literally rip my hair out if I hear "Never Gonna Give You Up" or "All She Wants To Do is Dance" again. So that's out. I need to go through my cds and records and see if there's something in there I want to hear.
Everyone have a great Easter. I have the whole weekend off, so I'm happy.

Observations and Random Babblings.
1. If you lose your sunglasses, just wait a week and look and look, then finally break down and buy another pair...you'll find your 'lost' sunglasses IMMEDIATELY!
2. If you think something is going to be laughably easy, it will tke you approximately six times longer to do than you originally estimated. On the other hand, if you think something is going to be amazingly hard, it will be laughably easy. For instance, Four wanted a "Legend of Zelda" toy, a Link doll. No problem, since I made some for him last summer. A week, one jammed sewing machine and two stabbed fingers later, it's done. However, I volunteered with another mom to make a banner for our son's baseball team, and I thought it was going to be really hard. It was cake. It was premade-pop-in-the-oven-cookies it was so easy. And, the best part, it looks darn good if I say so myself.
3. It's April 12th, why is it 90' outside already? Where are my shorts?
4. Walking home from a baseball game with my boy at 8:15 at night is the best thing in the world. Hanging out and just talking...worth every penny on earth.
6. I finally told people in my own family I had a blog. I guess I finally don't feel I'm entirely stupid having one. It may be stupid, but I guess I'm ok with that.
7. Seeing the big smile on Four's face when he finds one googley eye in the button box is something worth framing.
8. I got a new sofa cover for my sofabed for $15. YES that's right, $15. My day has been made.
9. Whenever you clean every inch of your house because someone is coming over, they don't show up. But at least my house is clean.
10. I finally got "It's a Dirty Job" from the library, I can't wait to start reading it.
11. And, in my American Idol recap, can I just say I said as the show was starting "Taylor is going to sing Crazy Little Thing Called Love". If ever a song was screaming for blessed release, it is that song after last night. I really like Chris, but what was with last night? He should have sang Somebody to Love. Kelly was really good, but she needs to just...stop talking so much. Katharine was really good. Paris was good. I think, though, the bottom three is going to be Bucky, Ace and Paris. And Ace should be leaving, but we'll see how it goes.
12. I have a friend that moved away a few years ago and I lost her address and was bummed and I just found it today, so that made me pretty happy.
13. Wallace and Gromit, Genius, pure Genius. Where have I been all these years? (My favorite line from Curse of the Were-Rabbit "Gromit, ol' pal, I'll need a little assistance, please.").
14. I found out that they don't actually keep score in farm league baseball (7-8 year olds). I think this is good, because they're out there to have fun and make friends. My son's team is really coming together - the kids are really doing great. But the best part isn't if they win (or lose) it's just that they all came together, without knowing each other, and they're having fun and playing as a team. It's really great to watch.

Through a series of links yesterday, I hopped around to a few different blogs I hadn't seen before. One struck me as pretty funny, it's called "Dad vs. Dad" (http://dadvsdad.blogspot.com/). One of the posts was talking about his three fears -I believe it was called Triple D and his fears were the dark, dogs and the dentist.
Well, I thought to myself, I don't think there's really anything I'm afraid of, that I can think of. I mean, I like dogs. The dark doesn't bug me too much unless maybe my husband is on a business trip, which is rare (actually, nonexistant now that he's changed jobs) and the dentist has never bothered me. I'm lucky enough to only have two cavities in my 39 years so I haven't really had anything to worry about there.
Little fears, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention.
I have big fears, like one of my children (God forbid) passing on before me. That would destroy me. But that's not an everyday fear, if you know what I mean.
Then I found my fear.
I was washing dishes after lunch and ran the garbage disposal. It made a weird clunky sound so I turned it off, let the water run a bit and then stuck my hand in there and met my own personal hell.
I could feel the tension immediately hit me, and I began to panic. What if the garbage disposal turned on? What if my hand got chopped off? What is that...goo in there?? What the hell is going on?
Rationally, I know that the garbage disposal is not going to turn on and shred my hand into a bloody pulp, but you know what? I've read way too many Stephen King books and there is no way I'm taking that chance. You never know when some pile of nuts and bolts is going to go all Carrie on you and take you out.
Just back away my friend, back away.

I'm still feeling crappy and I'm on so much allergy medicine and tylenol that I think I'm starting to hallucinate, so it was a perfect day to check out the website of Christopher Moore. He wrote a book called "It's a Dirty Job" which looks pretty darn funny and he was just at my local small-town bookstore. He also wrote a lot of other books, but I haven't read them as I can only do 73 things at once and those slots, lately, have been filled.
I'm looking at his website and there's a little contest - "Win a Free It's a Dirty Job t-shirt", so I go and check it out. To enter, you have to fill out this little "essay" describing which of his books is your favorite and why.
Well, everyone knows that stay-at-home moms are on budgets, so it's not like I can just go buy new clothes or books whenever I feel like it, though, if I had to pick, I'd probably buy a new book before I'd buy clothing.
So I enter the contest and say I haven't read any of his books, but I am Hold #3 of 8 on his new book at the library, and being a stay-at-home mom, I could always use a new shirt.
We'll see if he truly has the sense of humor he appears to have.

Thursday night's game went pretty well. It was 10-12 (they lost) but they played well. The Boy was 4-4 with 5 RBIs...which my husband is very proud of. I'm proud that they all cheered on their team, every person that was up at the plate they cheered and called their name and supported them.
My allergies have been AWFUL for the last week so I have just been hiding out. This time of year sucks because it's so beautiful outside but I'm so miserable. I haven't been taking any allergy medicine because I'm so crabby when I do. I'd rather feel miserable from allergies than feel miserable because I'm crabby to my family. I'm just getting sick of feeling miserable!!
We had a surprise 80th birthday party for my father in law on Saturday, it was fun. My husband is the youngest of 10 kids and most of them were there. The ones that weren't able to make it will be here next weekend so that will be fun too.
I pulled out my Ry Cooder Chavez Ravine cd and have been listening to that lately. I like the music and that it's in Spanish and I (mostly) don't understand it, it's relaxing.
I've spent an hour on Joanne Rowling's website - she has a secret door that always has a do not disturb sign on it and it's OPEN. If you can get in, there's a secret inside which is fun but time consuming. So I need to go clean now because things just need to be cleaned.
Next Red Sox game, tomorrow night. I'll keep you posted!
