Over the weekend, Mr. Geek treated the family to a baseball game - The Arizona Diamondbacks vs. The Boston Red Sox. The Geek Family hasn't been to a MLB game in a few years, preferring the benefits of tv for lazily sitting on the couch with commentators and regularly priced food. However, Eight likes the Red Sox (that was his Little League team last year) and so away we went. We arrived about an hour and half early and watched the Red Sox in batting practice. The ballpark has a roof on it, so the weather was a perfect 76' inside. We enjoyed ballpark hot dogs but we brought our own snacks and food for Five, aka The Picky Eater.
The boys played with their Brandon Webb commemorative toys, though they're not really toys and Five's broke immediately. Why give a "toy" to a kid if it's just going to break? Stupid commemoratives. We went to the team shop and bought three hats and a giant foam finger and then the game started.
First Inning: Seating arrangement: Mr. Geek, Eight, Five, Me. The game started well. Five (who is notorious for not liking to sit through anything) was enjoying heckling his brother and the 99% Red Sox fans sitting around us by screaming "Boo, you STINK Red Sox!" and waving his foam finger at all. Every time he waved his finger, he'd lean over and kiss my arm and say "You're on MY team, Momma!"
Second inning: Seating arrangement: Eight, Mr. Geek, Five, Me. Eight was getting a little perturbed at Mr. Geek and Five screaming their support for the D-backs and switched places with Mr. Geek to avoid the foam finger in the eye trick. Five had 30 pieces of Skittles Gum. Mistake.
Bottom of the 2nd: Tantrum. Five. Not good. Over? Blue-raspberry lemonade instead of regular. I blame the Skittles gum, though I'm sure there are deeper psychological reasons which will come up in therapy in years ahead.
Third Inning: Seating arrangement: Mr. Geek, Five, Me, Eight. Eight couldn't stand sitting near Mr. Geek by this point because he's only eight and can't quite take all teasing yet.
Bottom of the third: Tantrum finally abated, I took Five for a walk. When we returned to our seats, the kissing started again. I felt like Morticia Addams with my own miniature Gomez hanging off of my arm.
Fourth inning: Uneventful! No seat switching! No fits! Fun!
Fifth inning: Seating arrangement: Me, Five, Mr. Geek, Eight. This is the inning where everyone falls into complete stuperous quiet. Eight and Five both wanted to leave.
Sixth inning: We left, hit the team shop again and got a bat, ball and a tiny wooden bat on a keychain, which Five said he needed to ward off monsters. Of course, all the action started on the field now.

Eighth inning: Watched the rest of the game on tv. It was a good game, the D-backs had been stomped on the other two games of the series so it was nice we won.
How was your weekend?

Had a great weekend, didn't do a whole lot except for Sunday, threw a small NASCAR/B-day party for my friend. This weekend w/b pretty busy for us - it's fiance's annual Craw-dad/B-day party, and Sis is coming out for it too. Should be good fun.

May be the best thing I've read this month. Maybe the whole year.
Just think of all the exercise you got playing musical seats!
I like Boston too...The game is played at a much slower pace, and kids these days seem to like more action, not appreciating the finer more cerebral parts of the game(pinch hitting, replacing pitchers based on left hand or right hand hitters, etc). Although hanging at that neat (or is it 'cool:>) D-Backs stadium would be a treat
Donna - the Crawhead festival! Have fun and give the man a slap for me (you know what I mean).
Dixie - it's nice to have a built in entertainment group, that's for sure.
Ralph - the ballpark is wonderful. We used to go more often, but it was nice to sit out at batting practice right behind the dugout (the park is open to all during batting practice) and just enjoy the day.
I could just picture this as I read it. I had to chuckle and cringe right along with you. Great memories!
Sounds just like an outing with my family. The finer points of baseball are often lost while attending with little ones. But, the finer points of life are often missed without the little ones.
Oh, this one took me back... back to the days when we had weekend tickets at the Shrine on 35th Street... (famous last words but) I may use this as a starting point for a post on my blog....
